Perspiration, bleaching of hair from overexposure to the sun, exposure to pollutants – these are just some of the trauma your hair undergoes everyday. And when you are out on the greens, your hair is exposed to the sun for most of the day and it’s easy for hair to be damaged. So treasure your mane and get those luscious locks back in shape with these simple tips.

Healthy hair comes from within
Strong, shiny locks are an indication of good health so to improve the health of your hair, maintain a healthy lifestyle by eating a balanced diet, exercising regularly, getting enough sleep and not smoking.

Dry with care
Letting your hair dry naturally is best but when you have little time and need to look presentable, be sure to use the cool setting on your hair dryer as hot air can damage hair. Alternatively, keep the hair dryer a distance away and don’t blow dry the same spot for more than a few seconds.

Untangle knots gently
Avoid combing your hair when it’s wet. That’s when it’s most fragile. Use your fingers to gently run through your hair instead. And in choosing a comb, make sure it has widely spaced teeth and smooth, rounded tips to protect your scalp.

Shampoo and condition the right way
For those with oily hair, daily shampooing is needed to remove dirt and excess oil while those with dry hair need only wash it on alternate days to prevent hair from drying out. Treat damaged hair with a rich leave-in conditioner to hydrate and protect it. But if you are using a normal conditioner, be sure to apply it an inch away from the roots or risk having your scalp become even oilier.

Manage long hair properly
Tying up your hair is a neat and quick way to keep it away from your face but beware not to tie it too tight or it might cause hair to break or even hair loss. Prevent split ends by going for a trim every two to three months. And when drying hair with a towel, avoid rubbing as it will cause hair entanglement.

Save hair from sun damage
Your skin is not the only part of your body that can be damaged from overexposure to the sun. Your hair can be bleached and dry out while your scalp can get sunburnt if proper care is not taken while you are outdoors. The best way to prevent sun damage is to put on a hat, cap or wrap a scarf around your head. Alternatively you can apply leave-in hair conditioners that contain SPF protection.

Avoid alcohol in hair products
The next time you pick up a bottle of hair product, read the ingredients carefully. Give those that contain alcohol or formaldehyde a miss as they can be very drying on the hair.

Pamper hair with treatments and masks
If you are out in the sun a lot, it’s best to replenish your hair’s moisture with an after-sun deep repair mask containing hair strengtheners like keratin and jojoba oil at least once a week. All you have to do is apply the mask on liberally, wrap your hair in a warm towel and relax. In just 10 to 20 minutes, your hair will emerge shinier, smoother and healthier.

Bust chlorine before it takes effect
A refreshing swim feels great on a hot day but the chlorine in the pool can really dry out your hair. To reduce the amount of chlorine from being absorbed by hair, wet your hair before swimming. Then hit the showers as soon as you can after your dip. On top of shampoo and conditioner, a quick rinse with club soda can help eliminate chlorine from your tresses.
