Wie Should Stick To Ladies Tournaments For Now
When Michelle Wie started pitting her skills against the big boys the first time round, many were curious as to how she would fare. A few years on, Wie is still struggling against the men and performing below expectations in the ladies tournaments. This has prompted many to advise Wie to try winning the women’s tournaments first before attempting the men’s.

The Accidental Champ
Thanks to a golfing friend, 24-year-old Camille Fallay is the first European golfer to take part in the SLGA Amateur Open. At +2.9, she also has one of the lowest handicaps in the A1 division which is opened to golfers with handicaps of 5.0 and below.

Judging by the very impressive par 72 she garnered during her practice round, her first ever on the Seletar Course, Fallay is one of the leading contenders for the champion’s trophy in the tournament.

Locals Overtake Foreign Competitors
While the foreign competitors fared better on the first day of the SLGA Amateur Open, it was the locals who took charge on the second day as the searing heat took its toll on the foreigners.

SLGA members Melissa Loh and Koh Sock Hwee led the pack in the A1 and A2 Divisions while Christabel Goh was placed second in the A2 Division after the second day. Top contender and French tourist, Camille Fallay, was tied for first at the end of the first round but faltered today. She’s now placed third, 6 points away from Loh. “I will have to shoot a low score [today] to have any chance of winning the tournament,” Fallay lamented.

Melissa Clinches Title
The last time a Singaporean won the SLGA Amateur Open, it was way back in 1993. So it was with great joy that 18-year-old Melissa Loh clinched the overall title and topped the A1 Division (for handicaps of 5.0 and below) after three rounds at the Seletar Country Club. As an SLGA member, Loh is proof that the SLGA’s youth programmes are beginning to bear fruit.

Her wins over the past year and good showing at international tournaments have prompted SLGA vice-president, Susan Gan, to predict that with Loh on the national team, the women’s team were good enough to win the silver at this year’s SEA Games. “We’re quietly confident that they can bring back at least the silver medal,” says Gan.

Three-Way Tie In Hong Kong Ladies Masters
Zhong Xiao Long, Teresa Lu and Libby Smith topped the table with identical scores of 72 in the first round of the Hong Kong Ladies Masters held at Discovery Bay Golf Club today. However with the other players hot on their heels with scores of 73, 74 and 75, the champion’s trophy is still up for grabs.

On another note, it was a day of celebration for Filipino Heidi Chua as she scored an ace on the 133-yard Hole No. 2. A pity the Hole-In-One prize of 300,000 Asia Miles was not to be hers as it wasn’t the designated hole.

Said HSBC’s head of global sports marketing and sponsorship, Mr Giles Morgan, this event is a reflection of the rapid growth in women’s golf in Asia.

Local golfers will have one shot at playing with these top international players – organisers are considering having a qualification tournament to decide who gets to play.
